“I THINK I’VE FOUND A FOSSIL. WHAT DO I DO NOW?”

.

If you think you’ve found a fossil on Prince Edward Island it is important that you contact someone about it as it may have potential to be researched.

If you find a fossil on PEI, here is what you should do:

1) Leave it exactly where you found it. Removing it may result in important information being lost.

2) Take several pictures of the find. Put a coin or other well-known object in the picture to help with the scale.

3) Record the GPS location.

4) You are welcome to contact Prehistoric Island Tours to help you determine if you have a fossil and what it could be. You may also contact archaeology@gov.pe.ca to inform them of your find. Please make sure to attach pictures.

5) If your fossil is of scientific importance both Prehistoric Island Tours and Archaeology will contact the province’s paleontological advisor, Dr. John Calder, for study, and of course celebrate your awesome find!
